Ain’t It Time? – Rainy Day Women
Rainy Day Women signalled their arrival into the Australian music scene in 2012 with their debut single ‘Sleigh Bed’, which went on to win the coveted WAM Song of the Year. Following this came the release of their first collection of songs, the Friends EP. The consequence of Friends was a wave of airplay across community radio and on national youth station triple j, underscored with national touring and recognition of yet another amazing band hailing from the Western coast. A long way to have come given they started as a bunch of friends from school with a shared appreciation for outfits such as The Sleepy Jackson, The Panics, Bon Iver, Elliott Smith and The Strokes.
Dylan Ollivierre , lead singer and primary songwriter of Rainy Day Women, had what some would consider a dream-like introduction to popular music. His father was a shipwright from Bequia, a small island in the Caribbean. One of the yachts he built belonged to Bob Dylan, and on-board was where Ollivierre’s parents met in 1979.
Dylan first met his namesake when he was 12 years old and had just started playing guitar; “We were at one of his shows and he asked me if I knew all the chords and I naively said yes. The whole experience was really inspiring and pushed me to work harder on my guitar playing and song writing. I started learning classical guitar when I was 11 and then stopped the lessons and taught myself how to play electric. My ultimate goal was to learn ‘Little Wing’ by Hendrix. Once I realised I could play the songs that I loved, I was obsessed”.
This unbridled commitment to penning accessible yet considered pop songs is what has put Rainy Day Women on the map, having won WAM’s Best Pop Act of the Year in 2013, as well as being the most played artist/band on triple j Unearthed.
Following their recent single ‘Mars’, comes another offering from their upcoming album Ain’t It Time in the form of a new track titled ‘Mrs Jones’. Ain’t It Time was recorded in a farmhouse near Margaret River in Western Australia where the band set up a makeshift studio, and will be released through littleBIGMANrecords on October 3rd 2014.
